Book Review Options Not Obligations by Marc Warnke

What Marc Warnke shares in his book Options Not Obligations is not only refreshing, and inspiring, he actually helps the reader walk though practical application to keep things in perspective.
Some of the hightlights include:

Marc Warnke was an alcoholic

Introduction of the term “Family First Entrepreneur”

Discussion of the false ideas about wealth

Provides practical ideas to help the reader “get to ONO”

Opportunities of reflection throughout the book:

List how you could improve your life by cutting your TV time in half

Make a list of items you have buyers remorse for and write the negative impact it has had on your life

Write your Eulogy

Sometimes it’s good to step away from SEO, PPC, Conversion tactics, Email Marceting, and eCommerce, and get down to the why’s behind the what’s of your life and business. Marc Warnke helps the reader do just that.

I put a little video together describing the book as well. You can also find the video here.

Here’s why.

Video Book Review Internet Marketing from the Real Experts

Update: Missy Ward just informed me that the net proceeds from the sales of this book will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Excellent! See her post here.

Don’t have time to become an expert? This book understands! It’s broken down into 3 Minute lessons from 88 different internet marketing experts so you can learn what you need to know and implement it as soon as possible. Need to learn about Email Marketing (one of my passions), then head over to the email marketing section (one of 11 sections in the book).

I decided to turn on the camera and share a little about this book (Please pardon the “Play” button right on the center of my face…).

If you can’t see the video for some reason, go here. If you are interested in getting a copy Amazon is selling it right now for about $14.93.

3 Step Formula for Getting a New Site Indexed in Google in 24 Hours or Less

Let’s be clear, getting a site indexed is the first step to ranking well in the search engines, and simply means that the search engines (in this case Google) are aware of your site. The site is in their index (database), which is different than getting your site ranked high on the search results pages for keywords you are targeting (much more complex). To get indexed, one could certainly submit a URL to Google for consideration, and while that is a good approach, I think I have one that may be faster.

1 – Search for Other Sites in Your Market or Related Niche

Go to Google.com

Search for blogs in your market: [keyphrase] blogs

Select one of the sites in the top 10 listings that you feel looks professional, that has comments, and readers you feel might benefit from content on your site.

2 – Comment on Related Post

Find a post that you would like to comment on. Tip: Locate a recent post already having a decent number of comments on it.

In the comments section, add your name in the “Name” field. Some would argue this is a place to put your targeted keyphrase, in this instance the goal isn’t link building, the goal is to get your site indexed. Do not put your keyphrase in here because comments that do this are often dumped in the blogs spam bin, or ignored altogether by the person approving comments.

Email: Many blogs require your email address in order to comment. This is good because as they often notify you when either your comment is approved, or when someone else comments on the post.

Add a comment; preferably one that continues the conversation or asks another question. Bottom line here, make the website owner happy to approve your comment.

3 – Include Your URL

Before submitting your comment, pay close attention to the (often optional) “Website” or “URL” box. This is the place to put your website address. When the comment is approved, and the search engines see it, they will be curious, and go visit your site as a result of the blog comment.

That’s it! Your done. 24 hours from now perform the Google search for your domain (described at the beginning of this post), and see if your site isn’t indexed.

Bonus – Bookmark the Blog Post

If you want to supercharge this, consider using one of the top social bookmarking services like, Digg, Delicious, or StumbleUpon, and bookmark the post that you just commented on. These sites are constantly crawled by Google and doing so can accelerate the indexing process. The site owner will be glad you did it too.

Was this useful? Have other ideas? Please chime in with your comments below (be sure to include your website in the proper place.

8 Trends Online Marketers Should Plan for in 2010

Google Will Continue to Mix it Up

With a rash of announcements earlier this month (discussed here) you can be sure they will continue to innovate and develop technologies to serve searchers relevant content and continue to organized the worlds information in 2010. Things to look for? I don’t have any “inside information” to share, but here are the areas I’ll be looking out for.

New ways to reach mobile searchers

More changes that will impact pay per click customers

Better integration of Google maps with mobile phones (interesting to see how Garmin and Tomtom will respond)

Real-Time (Search) Becomes Prime-Time

Real-time search is something Google introduced earlier this month as well (read more here), and is certainly a huge part of their future. Look for real-time search populating more search engine results pages near you in 2010.

Twitter Less Popular Yet More Critical

The popularity curve of twitter reached its peak in 2009. 2010 will have those who “get Twitter” stick with it and make it work for their business. I think the user of Twitter and other social media should be held in balance with other priorities, but if Google is serving real-time results from Twitter (previous section) in their search pages, you know it must be worth looking at (for some a second time). 2010 won’t match the growth of new Twitter accounts as seen in 2009, but it will become more important and relevant for those who understand the value of such immediate results.

YouTube Grows in Features and Popularity

Google continues to develop this property, and may very well be on a course to make it a profitable venture in the near future. 2009 they offered the option to sync Google (Gmail/Friendconnect) accounts with YouTube accounts. This not only helps tie everything together for social search, but also makes it easier for users who prefer to have one identity to tie all their social activities to. Active Youtube users will continue to benefit in search results as they build social activity on Youtube. Iin 2009 I found that traffic from YouTube.com out pulled Google search results nearly 3 to 1 (case study here), there is no evidence this trend won’t continue. Look for tighter hooks into social sites from YouTube (already have “Autoshare” feature), and better tools for video publishers to get the word out.

Email Marketing Grows as an Essential Tool

Do you have a list? Are you building a list? Having an email list is essential for any online business. There are many reasons to have an email list as a part of your email marketing strategy, perhaps I can share one concept here. For those who are active in social media, when any of those services become unavailable (they aren’t perfect), you’ll here screams and sounds of horror on the social web, like when Twitter went down earlier this year. As these services continue to become more critical, so does the impact of their downtime. Don’t let those sites control your ability to communicate with your readers, build a subscriber list. Not sure where to begin? Consider any of these services here, or here (aff links), there is also a free version (entry level) for this service.

Making Your Site Easy for Mobile Readers

I recently read an article on SmallBizTrends.com from Lisa Barone on mobilizing your site. She has some great tips and recommends services to help make your site prettier for mobile browsers. I recently installed this Wordpress plugin by the folks at Bravenewcode making MarketingProfessor.com easier to read for iPhone/iTouch/Droid users, they continue to upgrade the product, with a recent update supporting the latest version of Wordpress.

Marketing Automation – Competitive Advantage

Leverage is the most powerful thing in business. Technology is a tool to provide leverage. There are many great tools out there to help online marketers leverage their content and value to the community in a personal but automated way. Small business online marketers who invest, not only in the tools, but in the process of integrating the tools into their business to sell their products and services, will be in a position to leapfrog competitors. Here is an account from earlier this year of how marketing automation is used with another site I operate. Many get started with a less expensive service such as this one (aff link- pardon the audio). If you don’t have tools in place, and have an online dimension to your business, consider subscribing to a service that makes sense for you. If you have one, commit to integrating it’s use in your business.

Consistency and Discipline Remain Prized Virtues

The web can be an amazing place, it can also be a huge time waster. Understand your enemy in the New Year, and strive to eradicate it. Ideas on how to do just that can be found here, here, and here (goals).

What Say You? Lots of great opportunities in the new year, what is missing from this list? What will you be particularly focused on? Enter the discussion below.

Your Most Dangerous Enemy in the New Year

There are many enemies for the online entrepreneur. Some are technology related such as a website going down, a spammers, hackers, etc. Others could be competitors or an emerging technology that takes your solution off the table.

After my friend Greg unknowingly (well, he’ll know when he reads this) lodged this idea in my mind, I’m convinced it is the most dangerous enemy in the new year, for YOU and for me.

It’s not a new enemy. In fact, it has likely been busy with us all in the last year, and years prior.

The single most dangerous enemy in the new year is distraction. Distraction will take your day in the wrong direction, will prevent you from achieving your goals, and will take time you can never get back. …if you let it. I could go on, but I’ll save it for the comments.

Your turn: What are some of the other ill effects of distraction? How do you overcome them (or not)? What other enemies do you see in the new year? Am I on target, off base, or somewhere in between by calling out this as the most dangerous enemy? Chime in below.

Free Services Can Be Costly for Online Businesses

Last week Twitter went down (why I didn’t care much) and more than a few people were upset about it, even as I write this, there are complaints that Twitter is slow. Now with tr.im URL shortening service closing up shop, (thanks to Michelle MacPhearson for her post on this) and a sense that other such services are not far behind (cli.gs), online marketers should pause and ask some questions.

Impact: What impact would there be to your business if all the free services on the internet went away? Not only the services you use but those used by your market.

Cost: What would it cost your business if these services go away, consider that against what it would cost you to invest in a paid service (or purchased software that you can host yourself and get support for).

Free Services Will Always Be Around – Some Are Worth Paying For

No doubt there are other free URL shortening service you might consider, just count the cost of using these (here is a paid service for URL shortening and another one I use on this site) but there are some services for your online business that are just worth paying for.

Which Ones Are Worth Paying for? This is an important consideration especially for Internet Marketing newbies. Email List Management? Hosting? Coaching (information products about your market)? Chime in with your thoughts in the comment boxes below.
Beginners make make a few dollars early on, but that can be difficult to sustain, and scale to warrant quitting their day job and pursue their dream of freedom, and illustrious career marketing online. What often happens is aspiring online online marketers realize getting started with an online business might not be as easy as they thought.

3 Things Every Newbie Must Avoid to Succeed Making Money Online

Many default responses to success shortcomings relegate the problem to some sort of lack in technology tools, training, or other information, which can further distract from the real issues at hand, head trash.

Comparing Yourself to Others – Stop

Let’s face it, there are no clones. You are unique, and uniquely qualified for specific tasks. You cannot be replicated, and neither can your favorite internet marketing guru. It is my belief, that the sooner you get comfortable with that, the sooner you’ll be successful online or anywhere in life. This comes with maturity and maturity is often the by product of experience. Most of us are ordinary people. Not all are phenoms the likes of a LeBron James or more recently Bryce Harper (baseball) including online marketing gurus. The fact is they were getting started one day online as well, and took a unique journey. Your journey is unique, embrace that reality while learning from those who are ahead of you.

Living Without Goals

Someone wise once said, “Aim at nothing, and you’ll hit it everytime.” Have you ever set a goal, that you did not obtain? Welcome to the club. It just means you need more practice in goals setting. Make sure that your daily activities are supporting your goals, and fight off distraction like an attack dog. There are many legitimate ways to make money online, but without goals, you won’t arrive there.

If goals are worth having, they are worth writing down.

I’ve found four goals to work well annual, quarterly, weekly and daily. In using my timer, one could say that I have goals with each task I write down in my daily checklist. My goal is to beat the timer in accomplishing a task. I encourage you to consider that as well.

Operating Outside of Your Abilities

Do you enjoy sports? In a recent playoff series, one commentator said that players are trying too hard and playing outside of their abilities. This happens as well with many newbies in internet marketing, and can be a result of comparing (point 1). Don’t get me wrong, you need skills to succeed online. As you grow, you will sharpen your skills. What I’m talking about here is abilities. Abilities are activities that you are wired to do, do well, and enjoy doing for the most part. While I have the ability to do my accounting, I don’t enjoy it, nor am I wired to do it, and as a result am not very good at it, but it is essential. My accounting abilities (or lack thereof) is a constraint in my business. As such, I hired someone to do much of it. Your abilities and constraints may be different, find someone to outsource the work to, or partner who is cutout for that task. John Assaraf said it well, “Hire people who play at what you work at”.

Bottomline: Avoid the traps that easily ensare you when getting started with an online business, when you do that, success is just around the corner.

Talk Back: What say you? Ever run up against these constraints? What concerns you about starting your online business? What have you realized in your online endeavors about your constraints?

Social Networking Overwhelm, Integrated Social Profiles in Outlook

What is Xobni?

Xobni is software that runs on top of Outlook. It makes searching Outlook fast, displays threaded conversations, email analytics, file attachments are much easier to find, you can navigate by contacts in your inbox, extracts phone numbers from emails and social profiles, intelligent calendar scheduling, and offers web services and social network integration. It currently integrates with LinkedIn, Facebook, Yahoo Mail, Skype, and Hoovers.

My Experience with Xobni

When I went to download it, I saw these clear notices about it not working with Outlook when configured with caching (Caching allows for offline access for Exchange users). Bottomline, if you are using Outlook with an Exchange server and have caching enabled don’t install Xobni, otherwise you are good.

After completing the install it had to index my Outlook inbox, this took some time (lots of emails , after that, I was off and running. I found the interface intuitive and simple docked on the right side of Outlook. Facebook gives me the most recent status update for a contact, as well as any recent photos, LinkedIn tells me their title, number of connections, both let you click to directly access their social profile. It also ranks contacts based on volume of communications with them.

Important Update from Xobni (Per Evan’s Comment Below):
Hi guys, I work with Xobni. I just wanted to clarify that Xobni does work with cached exchange mode (or non-cached exchange mode, your choice).
Let me know if you have any questions.

How it Helps Small Business Marketers

It is a time saver. For those in online marketing, speed of information is just as important as information quality. I’m finding that centralizing these social networking profiles creates awareness of my connections and this can create more opportunities to connect with them and add value. I’m in Outlook a lot, and I find this helps me keep contacts top of mind, it also is another data point for information in my market. The search capabilities are pretty impressive, and very useful if you don’t have everything filed just right in Outlook, and the one-click scheduling feature for contacts is something I’ve not seen before. I have included a video below which reviews the features in greater depth.

Who is Xobni For?

Anyone who has a Hoovers Online account, Facebook, or LinkedIn social networking profiles, and wants to centralize information to increase your connectedness with contacts should consider Xobni.

Just a quick correction for you: Hoover’s data in Xobni does NOT require a Hoover’s account. It is available free of charge to any Xobni user.

Outlook users who want faster search, easier scheduling, threaded conversations, and nifty email analytics, Xobni does that (and a few other things). If you are getting started with your online marketing or small business marketing ventures and use Outlook you might want to start out with Xobni sooner than later.

One of the great things about using Firefox as your web browser is the wide range of add-ons available. Below is a list of 3 great add-ons to use for those interested in monitoring search engine marketing efforts.

3 Great SEO Plug-ins for Firefox

NOTE: This is not a complete review or exhaustive list of Firefox add-ons for search engine marketers, please continue the conversation by sharing your favorite tools in the comments section right after this post.

Rank Checker

Aaron Wall and the folks over at SEOBook have done a great job with a handy little tool, Rank Checker. It sits right in the corner of Firefox, and has a simple interface, allowing you to quickly and easily get important information on search engine ranking for your given keywords and domains.

Consider these <a href="http://www.marketingprofessor.com/search-engine/seo-top-considerations-every-beginner-should-know/"title="search engine marketing tips" target="_blank">search engine marketing tips as you explore its capabilities:

Ability to exclude Google personalization search results (this can throw off numbers if you typically logged into a Google account while searching)

Presets gives you the ability to save your search query settings (keywords, and etc.) for fast loading in the future. Load them up, hit the start button and you are done, a big time saver.

Scheduled Tasks gives you the ability to access your presets on a scheduled basis.

Export export your results to CSV for further analysis and manipulation.

Get Rank Checker here.

Search Status

Need a quick view of indexed pages or back links? Look no further than Search Status.

At a glance of the status bar (or where you configure it to reside), you can see PageRank, Alexa, and Compete ranks, and with a two clicks, this add-on can tell you indexed pages or back links for each of the big 3 search engines.

It will also quickly highlight no-follow links.

Learn more and download Search Status here.

SEO Quake

For search engine marketers, this add-on is what it sounds to be. Very robust and functional on the fly feature set. As will all these tools it has some overlap with others mentioned here. What I find useful that I don’t yet see in the others, is the tie to Yahoo SiteExplorer and Google Blogsearch.

In addition, the flexibility of toolbar options is great. You can have the seobar, which hovers on page, or the seo toolbar which is a standard toolbar. In either case the tool bars can be configured to auto-populate search information (Alexa, Google indexed pages, etc.) when the page loads, or on request, which I like as it has minimal impact on performance.

Get SEO Quake here.

Firefox is a great browser and one of the advantages is the availability of plug-ins. These plug-ins are also easy to disable at any point if you find your browser gets too cluttered, or you don’t need them. For search engine marketers, whether you are interested in understanding how your site is optimized, or what the competition is doing, you can’t go wrong with any of these search engine optimization plug-ins for Firefox.

Continuing the Conversation: Are you using Firefox? If so have you used add-ons? Which add-ons do you like? Which add-ons or tools do you like for monitoring search engine optimization? Chime in using the comments box below.

StomperNet has created a lot of buzz online. This most recent product, Formula5, is no different. I share my take on this course, and help readers determine if this course is for them.

<a href="http://www.marketingprofessor.com/rec/snf5"title="StomperNet Formula5" target="_blank">When MarketingProfessor.com was started, the goal was to provide solid advise that helps people in their business. Hence the “Real. Profitable. Advice.” tagline… There is a lot of information out there, and more hype than ever. My hope is that as small businesses and entreprenuers you willl find value in what is shared here. As we plow through an economic downturn together, now, more than ever it is critical to take time and fine tune your business, not to survive, but thrive.

Today I would like to share with you my take on the StomperNet Formula 5 Program which becomes available for purchase soon. I think the release of this course is timely, especially for those who know there are <a href="http://www.marketingprofessor.com/get-started-online/online-marketers-faqs-available-for-download/"title="Legitimate Ways to Make Money Online" target="_blank">legitimate ways to make money online. Whether you purchase it or not, many have already benefited from the free resources available. You can too.

StomperNet Formula5 (FormulaFIVE) Review

Update: Forumla 5 sold out and is no longer available for purchase, I’ve chosen to keep this review in place, as it gives you an idea how the folks at StomperNet operate, and well, it’s a fairly thorough review (so, I’ve been told). Enjoy. -Travis

Hint: There is a teleseminar today (Thursday at 8pm EST) with Rich Schefren and Paul Lemberg discussing it in detail. <a href="http://www.marketingprofessor.com/rec/sn"id="wng0" title="Formula5 Teleseminar info is here" target="_blank">Formula5 Teleseminar info is here.

Disclosure: I am a StomperNet member. This puts me at a unique advantage in offering this review because I have personally met the creator of the program (August of 2008, StomperNet Live 6 event in Atlanta). I have also reviewed most of the course (yes, StomperNet does a good job, giving members early access to most things).

Formula5: The Launch

I have to say, there is a lot to learn in observing this launch. If you want an example of how to use combine video and social marketing, look no futher than what Andy Jenkins and his team have done. Video case studies, an MBA In-A-Box eBook, a contest, a blog where participants share their stories.

Stories: One person “made an extra $3k after spending 20 minutes adding these factors.” These were people who haven’t taken the course yet, they haven’t purchased the course! They simply participated in the MBA In-A-Box challenge. Here is a comment from someone who used the “Zombification Gambit” technique (it’s an email) and resurrected 2700+ dead customers.

Usually business owners and online marketers are happy to have customers refer them with testimonials, with Formula5 people are endorsing the program… as prospects.

The launch has been very interesting, but the comments offered by those participating in the pre-launch challenge are very compelling.

So What Is Formula5 Anyway?

“The BIG IDEA: If you pick one strategy from each Formula and it grows revenue by 15%, then the Compounding Effect of the 5 on top of each other will yield 100% growth – DOUBLING the size of your business.”

There are 5 Formulas (surprise, surprise):

Formula 1: Margin Magnifier

Formula 2: Sales Stackers

Formula 3: Lead Landslide

Formula 4: Conversion Control

Formula 5: Turbo Thruster

The formulas can be applied to any business at any stage. That is one of the things I noticed it is flexible, and the principles are for all businesses not just those online.

Delivery: I don’t know about you but when I think of formulas, I have mixed emotions. Excitement, because formulas produce a given outcome, consistently. Angst, because I’ve taken “guru courses” before, which consisted of a box (usually a heavy one) with all the materials, a pat on the back, and a “good luck”!

Just like a college professor controls what will be covered in a semester (syllabus), the folks at StomperNet are taking a similar approach (sigh of relief) with Formula5.
Customers get:

A box in the mail with the first formula

Access to an online community of other Formula5ers

Remaining formulas (DVD’s) complete with worksheets and transcripts delivered to your door every 3 weeks.

Formula5, Keeping it Real

Point 1: That which is it’s strength is also its downfall. While the syllabus style delivery is certainly advantageous in applying the formulas over time, some will not like this. If you are someone who prefers consuming information via DVD and transcript (and many do) you are going to have to be patient. While all StomperNet Formula5 formulas will be viewable in the web portal, some find it important to “break-away” from the computer while learning. I understand, be aware, you might find yourself frustrated. That said, you’ll have to decide if it is worth the wait.

Point 2: While I’m a big fan of “Starting Right” with anything. I would caution anyone who doesn’t have an established business who is thinking about purchasing. Don’t get me wrong, you will learn, and be ahead of others starting, but the sweet spot is for those who have something to improve (products, services, …a business). So if you are a tire kicker when it comes to striking out on your own, this might not be the entry point for you. However, if you have an established business, this could be your best investment of 2009.

StomperNet Formula5, Is it Profitable?

We all need to be spending time on our business to make it profitable (or increase profits), especially given the state of the global economy. From what I’ve seen in the course, with all the outlines and forms included. Formula 5 is certainly profitable (if you apply it).

One note on the forms: These forms are single sheet (mostly), simple, and clear. They are so simple it is profound. I chuckled when I saw the promotion of this product “The System is So Brilliant – You Don’t Have To Be”, but as I was preparing this post, and reviewing these checklists, I can see why they used this language. The simplicity of these forms makes you want to get started.

My Advice on Stompernet Formula5?

If you are a business owner, or work in a small business (and have authority), let me encourage you to take a look at what they are offering in this program. Watch the Formula5 videos, they are high quality, engaging, and educational. Read the Formula 5 blog, lots of information, and a few interesting stories. Whether you have a <a href="http://www.marketingprofessor.com/get-started-online/online-marketers-faqs-available-for-download/"title="web 2.0 marketing strategy" target="_blank">web 2.0 marketing strategy or no <a href="http://www.marketingprofessor.com/get-started-online/online-marketers-faqs-available-for-download/"title="web marketing strategy" target="_blank">web marketing strategy at all, review the MBA In-A-Box, it is free (and big, like 96 pages!), or hop on tonight’s Formula5 teleseminar to listen to the creator first hand, Paul Lemberg with Rich Schefren.

If you can swing it in the budget I would not hesitate. I want to learn from guys who are doing it, as I’m sure you do to. I’ve spent a lot of time on technologies that help online marketing and sales, now is prime time to focus on business to grow revenues, and thrive. Will you be joining me?

Special Gift
