8 Ideas for Using QR Codes in Your Marketing

It’s important to understand that QR Codes need not offer much if any explanation, early adopters get it, and it creates curiosity. Just be sure you offer value on the other side of the code. This is an opportunity for further engagement with your market, that they are opting in for so make the most of it!

If you spend any time at book stores, you’ll notice this more and more on books. I received a book as a gift in the mail last week. It had a QR Code on it. I scanned it with my android phone and it took me to a YouTube video. The author congratulated me on scanning the code, and provided a special welcome to the book, and let me know where I can find out more about him, etc. Well done!

There are many functions for QR Codes in your marketing. Pick one or two of your favorite ideas, and implement them as quickly as possible. Measure the results to see what impact they are having. The great thing is, there is little or no maintenance required with QR Codes once they are in place, and they make for a great way to extend your reach and further connect with your market.

IMO, the average user won’t use QR codes.

For sure, QR codes are an emerging technology (in terms of adoption), and time will tell if they stick. The reality is, the average consumer is getting more and more tech savvy, and you can bet if a a 20 something with a college degree is your target market, they may already be there.

Another example I love: On the Contact Us page of a company’s website, include a QR Code that links to the company’s location on Google Maps (I use my iPhone as my GPS, so one scan and I’m on my way in my car). I think this should become standard practice now.

Great idea. Perhaps two QR Codes, one for the address, and one for the Google map.

IMHO some of your suggestions are missing the point a little. In many of the above instances a clickable link would work much better (ie, in email for example). The big + for QR codes is within printed literature.
    1. Put one on the back of your business card: it might link to your LinkedIn profile, or maybe your About page of your blog or web site. It will offer the user a lot more information about you than would normally appear on a card.
    2. Add QR codes into the pages of a brochure. It will bring static text and pics to life by offering a QR code to a product video, which might show the special features of a product or service.
    3. Put a QR code onto packs of supply items used with a product. Specially good if there is tough competition for supplies contracts – you might for example link the QR code to a special prize, or contest.
    4. Put a QR code on the back of a product to provide the user with hints and tips on how to make the product perform better, or to offer support information . . .
Just a few of many ways that QR codes can bring something different to the party!

      Russ-

Great additions you’be offered here! Yes, another place not mentioned is for marketers who ship physical products.

Your point is well taken regarding a clickable link. No, email signatures might not be the most intuitive place for QR codes. However that somewhat defeats the purpose of creating intrigue (“everyone does clickable links” right?). Should QR codes truly take off, than this “intrigue” window likely closes as well.

      Am I wrong on this?

      Others?
