Yesterday the FTC unanimously approved Google’s acquisition of AdMob. AdMob is a service that allows advertisers to place paid ads on mobile devices. This is an important step for Google so they can be in a place to dominate this space. What does this mean for the online marketer? Is it good, and how might it be used?
Is Google’s AdMob Acquisition Good for Marketers?
The question is really rather rhetorical in nature when considering the reasons to use mobile marketing in your business. If this truly is the way of domination for Google for the next ten years, than it cannot be ignored.
Mobile Ad Scenarios
Yes, yes, and yes again. This is good for marketers. Time will tell how the technology will be implemented, but here are a few scenarios I’ve been thinking of:
- Low or No Cost Android Smartphone’s in exchange for ads. No longer have to pony up for a Smartphone, just the mobile service. This would make it much easier for you to reach more of your market.
- Real-Time Ads, based on GPS proximity to local advertisers (think food, drink, and other social gathering specials (coffee shops). “5 Minutes from here: Stop by ABC Coffee in the next 30 Minutes, Free Pastry with Latte“. If you are a local business, or even click and mortar, this could be a great service.
- Device Specific Ads this would be good for software developers and those who make accessories, but may benefit others too.
- Mobile Ad Remarketing. Allowing advertisers to display ads to visitors on sites other than their own after having previously visited the advertiser’s site.

These are just a few ideas, the big advantage for existing Google AdWords users is the simplicity of activating it, assuming it remains integrated in the existing AdWords management console.
What are your thoughts on Google’s latest acquisition? Good? Bad? Where am I going wrong with these scenarios? Other ideas? Chime in below.
