3 Tips to Capitalize on Google’s Latest Social Media Move – Get on Page 1 of Google

google-profile-pages01With the launch of Google Friend Connect last fall, users have given more attention to their profiles as they join various sites (like this one) using Friend Connect.  Google continues to make inroads into social media. Recently they modified how user public profiles display on search engine result pages.  If you want a free and easy way to get on page 1 of Google, now is a great opportunity.  In this post I’ll walk you through three things you can do to maximize the use of a public profile page, and it only takes a few minutes.

3 Tips to Capitalize on Google’s Latest Social Media Move – Get on Page 1 of Google

1.) Google Your Name

This is a good practice to do from time to time to see where you fall on the results page.  If you share a name with many other people than it will be competitive.  Pay attention for any sites you own, or manage, as well as social media sites where you may have profiles like, LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter.

Look at the bottom of the first page, you should see a Profile results for… entry similar to mine in the screenshot below (you may have two profiles as I do):

google-profile-pages02

Sidenote: A couple days ago I clicked through my profile and was prompted to get free Profile business cards printed (so I did it), nice!  An interesting approach for Google to get profile data cleaned up.

If you don’t see your Google profile listed there, would you like to?  If you are interested in being found on the first page of Google, goto #2.  If you are there, congratulations!  Now let’s beef up your profile a bit.

2.) Create or Update Your Google Profile

If you don’t have a profile yet (Google account), or yours doesn’t appear there, click the link that says Create a public profile page or simply go here.  If you have a Google account (and aren’t already logged in, click the link that says Sign in to see your profile, and sign in, if you don’t have a Google account just click the Create my profile button and follow the prompts.

Once you get into the Edit profile area, I have a few areas I’d like to emphasize, and one shortcut some of you will benefit from.

About Me (Tab): Fill out as much as you can so that you stand out as uniquely you.  This is true not only for the search engines to find it, but also those who read it.
Photo: As a marketer, you have a photo on your profile, do what you do with most profiles uploading one of your standard social network pictures.  This helps others recognize you and they’ll be more likely to make a connection.
Short Bio: This is in the A little personality section halfway down the page.  Give a brief summary about yourself, and what it is you and/or your company does.  Include HTML links if appropriate (not too sales oriented, use this to identify you).
Links: Of course enter your business and other public websites, however, this is a great way to share other ways people can connect with you.  As a marketer, do your best to be everywhere (within reason).  See this post for the SEO benefits of your Google profile page.
*Time Saving Tip: Google will do what it can to find public links about you intelligently so you can add them.  If you have a FriendFeed account, enter that profile URL first.  When I did that, it picked up all my profile information from FriendFeed, and presented them as available to add to my public profile.
Photos (Tab): Great way to share photos from your Picasa or flickr account.  Consider sharing photos from a recent tradeshow, or marketing event.  It will brighten up your public page.
Profile URL: Back on the About Me tab scroll to the very bottom, in the Profile URL section, choose the name friendly URL for the profile. This will make it easier for people to find you.

3.) Verify your Email

One last thing, I encourage you to verify your email.  This will put a green backgrounded white letter block next to your name that says Verified name. It will make your profile stand out a bit more, and it is logical to conclude if you have a competitive name, Google will favor results that have their email verified.  Do so in the Verified domains section just above A little personality on the About me page.

Ok, so it looks like I need to setup my profile, thanks for putting this together, and encouraging us to post our link.

    • Travis Campbell

My pleasure John. It really is a minimal amount of work with a great opportunity to get on page 1 when people search your name (first and last).

    Travis,

Thanks for your tip. I will create a profile page on Google. Do you think it is linked together with Google Connect?

My surname is not so common so I get high up on the search page. I get “14,100″ hits at the moment and here is the first 10:

    My EGO blog.
    My LinkedIn page.
    My Open Forum author page.
    My Twitter page.
    My Posterous page.
    My other blog on Blogspot.
    My account on Vimeo video.
    My FriendFeed page.
    My Blogger.com profile.
My Business Exchange account on BusinessWeek.

Search on EGO and my blog is #6 of 58,000,000 hits.

      Martin-

That is great! What you might consider is to add those links in your Google profile as well.

Remember comment with the link to your profile here as another place others can see it, as well as the search engines.

    Travis,

I have now created a Google profile. I added links to my profile, contact information, etc.

I wonder how long it will take until Google’s search robot finds it! ;)

    • Travis Campbell

As I mentioned, post the link here as a comment, it just might help get it indexed faster.

    OK. Here it is:

Google robot: “Come out and play!” as they say in that movie from 1979! ;)

    “Waaarrioooors! come out and play!”

Good deal Travis. Another good example of how to pass the TAG test.

    • Travis Campbell

Thanks for stopping by. Do tell Brent, what is the TAG test?

  • http://brentleary.com Brent Leary

The TAG (Twitter and Google)Test is just a quick way to find out how (or if) you show up on Google, Twitter and other social sites when people search for you or the products and services you can provide.

I moderated a webinar last week that featured three experts in the area of passing the TAG Test – Anita Campbell of SmallBizTrends.com, SOBCon founder Liz Strauss, and Hubspot VP of Marketing Mike Volpe. They shared their great experience, tips and tricks for helping people “pass the test”.

This is an especially useful tool for people with common names who are usually buried deep in the google results. It’s an easy way to get yourself on the 1st page.

    • Travis Campbell

And after Googling your name and seeing your profile, I see you grew up in Ohio. Doesn’t everyone have roots in Ohio?

Remember to put a link to your public profile here.

Travis – this was an amazingly useful article. As it turns out I didn’t have a profile – now I do. I hope to see a lot more tips like this; seemingly simple, but falls through the cracks of everyday life. Thanks again.

    • Travis Campbell

      Ivana-

Thanks for the feedback, it really is a great way to get on page 1 of Google.

Can you submit your link to share with the world your awesome profile page? :-)

  • http://youtubesecretweapon.com Julie Perry

What a wonderfully informative, Travis — very useful! Hey – did you see the news today that now in order to set up a YouTube account, you must also set up a gmail account? More steps being taken in the direction of its own social network.

In fact, with this latest change, TechCrunch made the observation: “Google is set on the video end for its social network that is coming together.” Looks like there’s even more reason than ever to have a strong YouTube presence as part of one’s overall social networking strategy. (But then again, I’m sorta bias.) ;-)

Thanks again for the great tips. Looks like I have some work to do on my Google profile.

    ~Julie

P.S. My mom is from Canton, OH. All roads lead back, huh? :-)

    • Travis Campbell

      Julie-

Thanks for your input, glad it was helpful. The importance of these profiles should be sizable as Google builds out it’s other properties like YouTube, etc.

Your profile page is looking great, come back and post the actual link so others can see it too :-)

Did not know your Mom was from Ohio too, yes it seems everyone has roots here!

    Thanks Tavis,

Keep the the useful info coming.

Just a quick tip on your Google profile if you are based outside of the US – the verification of your Google profile is not yet available.

However I still recommend that you update your Google profile.

    Thanks for the tips Travis.

      Krishna De-

Great tip! I have seen a fair amount of traffic via the profile, hopefully that will continue.

BTW, I was in Dublin to kick off a bike tour through Ireland. I found to be one of the most hospitable countries in all of Europe.

    Hi Travis,

Thanks for the great tips. I'm trying to add video clips to my Google profile so that they will come up in the same window where the photos appear. I have two pics now but added the Youtube link but it only shows as a web link, not in the “photo & videos” tab. Any ideas? If you search GoogleMaps for “realtor 92688″ I show up in the second spot. Click the photo to open the profile window over the map.

    Here's my profile: http://www.google.com/profiles/john.alesi

To my knowledge to date there is no way to add videos to your Google Profile. However, they are making lots of changes, so I could be wrong (some profiles having limited release updates…to support video?).
