What Impressed My Sister About Google Plus

Spoke with Tammy Castro a JD Edwards HCM Consultant living in Goodyear, AZ. I asked her about her experience with Google plus so far, and how it compares to Facebook. I wrote up a few things she offered for feedback.

She’s been using Facebook for 2 years, and got her feet wet with Google plus in recent days. The discussion was recorded, if you don’t see it below find it here.

What Impressed My Sister About Google Plus

Why do we need another social network?

  • She does not typically goto gmail on the web, it is delivered to her mail program on her computer.
  • Not a lot of notifications yet, as she doesn’t have a lot of people in her circles yet.
  • Facebook vs. Google Plus: Enjoys the circles, as it allows her to control what connections see.
  • Enjoyed the Hangout feature thus far. Would allow her to do more with her business associates. How it brings the person speaking to the front of the video carousel, and that it is free.
  • Interested to see how the system works once she has more connections in the system.

They [Google] took Facebook and made it better.

  • Will take time for it to get traction. Until she has a lot of her connections out there, she doesn’t envision it having a lot of value in the short term.
  • Would have loved to have a tool like Huddle when she was a young adult.

I found this interesting because like Tammy I am new on G+ and am also a FB user.  I took my time joining FB and honestly use it to keep in touch with former co-workers, family and yes, play games (I limit it to 2 games).  I’ve been on FB a few years now. I am on Twitter for maybe 6 months and use it to find sites of things I’m interested in, Art, Mac, yoga, whole food,.  I also started a WP blog for my art & poetry & photos last Dec.  I may in the future market my art but I’m not there yet.  I am  retired RPG programmer/system analyst and have been trying to keep up with the newest things on computers. ( I know more then the average person about computers but I’m not a PC person.) My blog ‘Keeping up’ is about that experience.  I finally got into G+ and again like Tammy wondered why. I have made circles filled circles and find it to be a little more personal then Twitter, where there really isn’t a lot of back and forth conversations. It is also different then FB because I can follow interests in a circle and look at what I want, this is nice.  FB I think will be the game place.  I can not imagine the ‘farm’ friends leaving for G+ or starting up another game, they have years of playing in with ‘friends’ established. So it is doubtful my friends, family circles will get filled.  I have enjoyed and learned from your tips and I thank you.  Hope you don’t mind the long answer, you did ask for imput

      Louise-

Always appreciate answers. Thanks for taking the time. Congratulations on your blog progress, don’t give up! Not sure how you logged in here to comment, but be sure to add a link to your blog so others can have a look.

I think it is interesting, the social game element, you make a good point. I’m sure Google has things in mind for that as well since that is such a huge driver for traffic at Facebook.

Do you see yourself coming back to Google plus? Is there enough there now to keep you coming back?

Enjoy the tips, and stay tuned there will be more help with Google + here in the future.
